"US troops out of Iraq now!" as the acid test for Green Party candidates

My call to revoke the endorsement of Jay Pond is consistent with what is advocated in an antiwar resolution which I authored and presented to the MN Senate District 61 Green Party caucus in March 2006. The final paragraph reads,

"And be it further resolved that the Green Party of MN and its locals will consider withdrawing endorsement of candidates who are unwilling to publicly support the Green Party's call for immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Persian Gulf."

Antiwar Resolution
Proposed for Adoption by the
Green Party of MN
March 7, 2006

Whereas the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003 was sold to the US population as a "last resort" after failing to get the government of Iraq to give up weapons of mass destruction, which top US government officials knew did not exist.

Whereas recent opinion surveys indicate that a large majority of Iraqis want all US troops to leave their country immediately.

Whereas the Green Party's endorsed candidate for US president, David Cobb called for the immediate, unilateral withdrawal of US troops from Iraq [during the latter part of the 2004 campaign], and

Whereas by 2004, the Green Party of Mass and other Green Party organizations in the US had concluded that the US occupation of Iraq is unjustified and must end immediately,

Whereas the "out now" position is supported by a large proportion of voters, and probably by a majority of DFL identified voters, yet DFL-endorsed candidates are avoiding the issue or are advocating support for the occupation of Iraq, using formulas like "smart redeployment."

Whereas Greens and the American people have the right to vote for real antiwar candidates,

Therefore be it resolved that the Green Party of MN reaffirms its call for the immediate, unilateral withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Persian Gulf.

And be it further resolved that the Green Party of MN and its locals will consider withdrawing endorsement of candidates who are unwilling to publicly support the Green Party's call for immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Persian Gulf.
