About KIPP
KIPP began in 1994 when Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin launched a program for fifth graders in a public school in inner-city Houston, Texas. In 1995, Levin established KIPP Academy New York and Feinberg's KIPP Academy Houston became one of Houston's first charter schools. Their students' accelerated academic achievement fueled the program's expansion.

The KIPP School Leadership Program originated in January of 2000 when Doris and Donald Fisher, founders of Gap Inc., proposed a unique partnership with Feinberg and Levin to replicate the success of the original KIPP Academies. With a $15 million dollar grant from the Fishers, the non-profit KIPP Foundation was established to recruit, train, and support educators opening KIPP public schools in high-need communities across the country. KIPP trains educators through coursework at the University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business, residencies at KIPP Schools, and support of their school start-up activities.
